SPOKANE VALLEY – The city is seeking community members to join the Planning Commission, with two positions open for a three-year term.
As current commissioners’ terms conclude, the city encourages both reapplications from existing members and new individuals to contribute to the city’s planning and development.
“Volunteering as a planning commissioner, by ordinance, is a three-year term,” city spokeswoman Jill Smith said. “Two of the current commissioner’s terms are expiring at the end of this year, which is what is creating the two vacancies. Existing members may also reapply if they choose to seek reappointment.”
Smith shared insights into the current Planning Commission and the city’s objectivess.
“The purpose of the Planning Commission is to study and make recommendations to the City Council for future planned growth through continued review of the city’s comprehensive land use plan, development regulations, shoreline management and environmental protection,” she said. “A significant duty of the Planning Commission is holding public hearings in carrying out these duties.”
Applicants must live in the city and express an interest in planning, land use, transportation, capital infrastructure and building and landscape design.
The city clerk will review applications to ensure they meet mandatory qualifications. The mayor then nominates selected applicants, with the City Council making a final decision on appointments.
The application is available online at SpokaneValleyWA.gov/Volunteer. Questions can be directed to City Clerk Marci Patterson at 509-720-5102 or [email protected].
Applications must be submitted before 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2023.
