Gardening By Osmosis

I couldn’t stand it another day. As soon as the snowplow had cleared my driveway I was out of my cave and on to the plant store.

There were Nurseries still open with enticing displays of gifts for gardeners but I was interested in being in the midst of live plants.

Entering the growing section I filled my lungs with a hearty portion of oxygen. The colors of exotic plants excited my senses. I had no idea there were so many varieties and colors of ‘Christmas Cactus.’

I had a magenta one at home but here there were white, red, several shades of pink including apple blossom, and rose. I couldn’t believe it but soft peach, orange, yellow and even lilac cactus were blooming.

I put my hat, gloves and thick winter coat in my cart and wheeled through the isles of paradise.

It was better than reading a cookbook with pictures of comfort foods.

I was specially interested in plant tags that read,”Easy to Grow, No Gardening Nohow Needed!”

Many of the plant names had so many consonants and misplaced vowels I could not begin to pronounce them. It didn’t matter though as I was sure I was in the tropics. I know I would have bought them all if margaritas were served.

Some of the plants listed more than four items for maintenance. I smiled at them and ‘did not touch.’

It was closing time at the plant store and I still didn’t have anything to take to the cashier. I guess I’ll have to go again.
