Lancers win one game at state

Liberty girls come home without trophy

YAKIMA – The Liberty (Spangle) girls volleyball team made a respectable showing in the state 2B tournament Nov. 8-9 in the Yakima Valley SunDome.

Coming in as the No. 13 seed, the Lancers shocked No. 4-ranked Goldendale in their state-opener, sweeping the Timberwolves, 3-0.

Set scores were 25-13, 26-24, 25-18.

With the win, the Lancers advanced to the quarterfinals to face league rival and No. 5-ranked Lind-Ritzville/Sprague.

The Broncos had dominated the Lancers all season, and the state outcome was the same, with Lind-Ritzville winning in straight sets, 25-17, 25-23, 25-17.

As the Broncos advance to the semifinals, the Lancers fell to the consolation round, where they faced the No. 1-seed, Adna, in a loser-out game.

The Lancers came out on fire, taking the first set over the Pirates, 25-18.

That would be their last set win of the state tournament as the Pirates won the next three, to take a 3-1 win.

Set scores were 19-25, 17-25, 15-25.

The loss eliminated the Lancers from state play.

Northeast 2B rivals Lind-Ritzville/Sprague finished second in the tournament and Colfax third.
