27 dead cats discovered inside burning home

SPOKANE VALLEY - The Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to a house on the 4200 block of N. Avalon just before 1:00 on Wednesday afternoon after smoke was reported to be coming from the residence.

Upon arrival, first responders observed smoke billowing from the home’s attic.

Firefighters efficiently extinguished a blaze originating in the kitchen, while a thorough search of the residence confirmed that no one was inside.

Unfortunately, the incident revealed a grim discovery as firefighters located 27 deceased cats within the house.

No injuries were reported among the responders, and the extent of the fire damage was confined to the kitchen. Though roads in the vicinity were briefly closed for safety reasons, they have since been reopened to traffic. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In response to this unfortunate incident, Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service is lending their assistance to the homeowner.

As the winter holiday season approaches, the fire department reminds people to keep a vigilant eye out for their neighbors. In case of observing any signs of smoke or fire, SVFD urges everyone to promptly dial 911 to ensure a swift and effective response from the authorities.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and community vigilance, especially during the holiday season, as the investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
