Liberty’s Hanegan qualifies for state cross country meet at Sun Willows

CHEWELAH – At least one Liberty runner has earned a spot in the state cross country meet following the regional championships Oct. 28 at Chewelah Golf Course.

Junior Mitchell Hanegan will be among the state competitors Saturday, Nov. 4, at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

He punched his ticket to state with a 15th place finish in the 1B/2B Regional meet, completing the 5,000-meter course in 18:12.88.

As a team, the Liberty boys finished eighth in the regional meet.

FOOTBALL

Freeman tops Medical Lake, 35-15, in Northeast A football matchup

MEDICAL LAKE – Cardinal quarterback Aiden Suddeth connected with Dakotah Phillips on a 25-yard touchdown connection in the second quarter to briefly tie their game with Freeman at 7-7.

But the Scotties would reel off the next four scores on the way to a 35-15 Northeast A League football win Oct. 27.

Freeman’s Colton Wells scored three times, one on a run a two more through the air from quarterback Luke Whitaker as the Scotties improved to 3-2 in NEA and 5-3 overall.

Medical Lake got a 98-yard rushing performance from Cylas Puzycki while Suddeth was 9-for-21 for 115 yards.

The Cardinals (0-8) play a season-ending cross-over game Saturday, Nov. 4 at winless Cascade (Leavenworth).

Lancers routed by Panthers, 55-13, in Class B game at River View

FINLEY – The Liberty (Spangle) Lancers were routed Friday, Nov. 3, by the River View Panthers, 50-13.

The Panthers scored one touchdown in the first inning and four in the second quarter; meanwhile, Liberty managed a single score in the second quarter.

The Panthers (8-1) had a 36-7 lead at the half and never looked back.

The Lancers (2-7) will play their last game of the season at home at 5 p.m. Friday against the Granger Spartans (3-5).

VOLLEYBALL

Blackhawks snap losing streak in final volleyball game of the season

CHENEY – The Blackhawks ended an 8-game losing streak and also avoided finishing in a tie for the basement in the Greater Spokane League volleyball standings with a 3-0 win over North Central (0-9 GSL, 3-13 overall) on Oct. 26.

Earlier in there week on Oct. 24, the Blackhawks dropped a 3-0 match at Gonzaga Prep.

The Blackhawks (1-8, 5-10) topped the Wolfpack 25-11, 25-17 and 25-11 as Joy Assonken delivered 13 kills while Haleigh Ghering added 11 assists and Kristin Emert had 10 digs.

At Prep, Cheney stayed close with the Bullpens it a tight first set, losing 25-17 before finishing with losses of 25-9 and 25-21.

Claire Watkins led Cheney with 12 digs followed by Ghering’s 11 assists and 10 kills from Assonken.

Liberty girls to play crossover game against Lake Roosevelt or Brewster

SPANGLE – The Liberty Lancer girls volleyball team has earned a spot in the post season.

The Lancers finished third in the Northeast 2B district tournament last week and will play in a District 6/7 crossover game this Saturday, Nov. 4.

The Lancers opponent had yet to be determined at press time.

The local girls will face the winner of the scheduled Brewster versus Lake Roosevelt game, which was underway at press time.

The crossover game is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Mead High School in Spokane. The winner will advance to the state 2B tournament in the Yakima Valley SunDome on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
