Mead's big third quarter results in win

CHENEY – The boys football team had one of its best starts of the season in a Greater Spokane League game at home against Mead. But as has been the case all season the Blackhawks had a critical point that helped Mead collect a 48-29 win, Oct. 20 at Tom Oswald Field.

The Blackhawks (0-8 GSL) stayed close to the Panthers (4-3, 4-4 all games) for the first two quarters, trailing 21-14 at halftime.

A pair of touchdowns to Camden Collins from Sam Coffin kept Cheney in it as the two connected on conversions of 31 and 22 yards.

But Mead workhorse running back Keegan Mallon, who had four touchdowns on the night, scored with 9 minutes, 29 seconds remaining in the third that started the Panthers on a 21-0 run.

A Cheney turnover on a high snap with 7:13 to play in the third gave Mead the ball on the Cheney five. One play later Mead's James Frahm would score the first of his two touchdowns.

Cheney scored the game's final two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as backup quarterback Mason Stinson found Carter Ittner for three yards and Treyson Little for a 9-yard strike.

With GSL play complete, Cheney still has a pair of games remaining, both at home. They face Eisenhower (2-6) of Yakima, Oct. 27 and then Walla Walla (0-8) in a crossover Thursday, Nov. 2.
