Liberty runners compete in Colfax
COLFAX – The Liberty (Spangle) cross country team wrapped up its regular season Friday, Oct. 13, at the league championships at the Colfax Golf Course.
The boys finished eighth as a team with 198 points; Valley Christian won with a team low score of 52.
Junior Mitchell Hanegan paced the Lancers, finished 13th overall with a time of 17:57.97 on the 5,000-meter course. Senior Marc Greenburg finished 44th in 20:05.24.
No other Liberty boys broke into the Top 50.
In the girls 5,000-meter race, freshman Allison Hanegan posted a time of 23:49.96 to finish 18th. Z’hanie Weaver, a junior, was the only other Liberty girl in the field; she finished 60th in 40:10.35.
FOOTBALL
GSL leading Mt. Spokane tops Cheney
CHENEY – Early in the second quarter the Cheney Blackhawks closed to within a touchdown of Greater Spokane League leading Mt. Spokane.
But the Wildcats reeled off three scores before halftime en route to a 42-6 win, Oct. 13 at Union Stadium in Mead.
Kordell Laher scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Sam Coffin for the Blackhawks, but Cheney could not stop Bode Gardner who scored four times, including a pair of interceptions run back for touchdowns.
Next up for Cheney (0-7) is a non-league game against Eisenhower of Yakima, 7 p.m. at Tom Oswald Field on Oct. 20.

Liberty boys lose in Chewelah
CHEWELAH – The Liberty (Spangle) boys football team lost to Northeast 2B league rival Jenkins (Chewelah), 28-7, on Friday, Oct. 13.
Individual stats were not reported.
Liberty (2-5, 2-4 in league) will host the Reardan Screaming Eagles (3-3, 3-3 in league), at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20.
Reardan is coming off a 25-0 win over the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos.

DeSales blows out St. John
ST. JOHN – The DeSales Irish routed St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse, 80-6, during the Eagles’ Homecoming game Friday, Oct. 13.
The Eagles only score of the game was on a pass to Tyler Hough in the second quarter.
The Eagles’ next game is at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, in Sunnyside against the Sunnyside Christian Knights.
SOCCER
Blackhawks drop pair
SPOKANE – It was an 0-2 week for Cheney soccer which lost its second game in as many tries at ONE Spokane Stadium.
The Blackhawks lost in another shutout, 1-0, to Ferris in Spokane, Oct. 11, and then at home to University, 5-4, Oct. 16.
Ferris got a goal in the 20th minute from Lexi Simpson and combined with a 4-0 loss to Lewis and Clark, Oct. 4, Cheney has yet to notch a goal at the new stadium.
Alex Miller scored three times for Cheney, which saw a 3-3 halftime tie broken by a pair of goals from U-Hi’s Isabella Longo in the 52nd and 79th minutes.
Cheney (2-6 GSL, 5-8 overall) concludes their season against Mead (4-3, 8-6) at 6:30 p.m. on Senior Night at Tom Oswald Field
SWIMMING
Cheney, Co-op swimmers score victories
CHENEY – Local swimmers won five individual events and three team titles in an Oct. 12 meet at Eastern Washington University.
Lauren Howe won in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races.
Jezelle Schmidt had a 1-2 finish with fellow Blackhawks swimmer Sophie Schaefer in the 200-yard individual medley. Schmidt also won the 100-yard backstroke.
Madi Bauman won the 100-yard breaststroke with Kate Kissell second. Bauman was runner-up to Howe in the 100 free.
Co-Op swimmers, those from other schools who are part of the Cheney program, also had notable outings.
Lewis and Clark’s Anjali Richards won in the 200-yard freestyle, followed by Medical Lake's Jess Richards and Lewis and Clark’s Morgan Herr.
In addition, Lewis and Clark’s Anya Atkinson topped Medical Lake's Richards in the 100-yard butterfly and Ava Swigart won the 500-yard freestyle and qualified for state, Coach Jennifer Hochwalt noted.
Brigid Dinnen, another co-op member from East Valley was runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle.
VOLLEYBALL
Liberty girls fall to Broncos
SPANGLE — The Liberty girls volleyball team fell to the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos in three sets Oct. 12.
The Broncos (13-0, 8-0 in league) won all three sets, 25-20, to stay unbeaten.
On the Lancer side of the court, Kendall Denny led the team with 10 assists, 6 kills, 26 digs and an ace.
Brooke Redder posted 11 kills and 8 assists. And Lancers Zoe Omlin added 27 digs, Brenna Tiegs 6 blocks and Devyn Cook 4 blocks.
Zoe Galbreath lead the Broncos with 16 assists, 8 kills and an ace. Teammate Sage Galbreath had 14 dig, 2 blocks and an ace. Addy Colbert posted 8 kills for Lind-Ritzville/Sprague and 1 ace.
Liberty (7-5, 5-3 in league) hosts Kettle Falls at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19.

St. John falls to Oakesdale, again
ST. JOHN – The defending state champion Oakesdale Nighthawks swept the St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse Eagles for the second time this season on Thursday, Oct. 12.
Set scores were 25-14, 25-21, 25-22.
The Eagles were led by Kaitlyn Hough with 3 aces and 9 kills. Setter Julia Guske had 21 aces, and Kenzie Stanley had 8 digs and 7 blocks.
For Oakesdale, Payton Davis had 26 kills and a team-high 15 digs. Setter Samantha Holling had 48 assists.
