New manager joins Turnbull

Has worked 21 years with fish and wildife

CHENEY – One of the area’s most popular recreational spots has a new manager.

Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge brought on Cassie Roeder as the new Refuge Manager, and Deputy Project Leader for the entire complex.

The entire Inland Northwest National Refuge Complex includes Turnbull, Little Pend O’Reille National Wildlife Refuge and Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge.

On Saturday, Oct. 14 she met with members of the non-profit Friends of Turnbull, and told them about current projects and goals in the refuge.

She said management from the three separate refuges work together.

Roeder said she transferred to Turnbull in June, and had been working in California previously.

“I have been with the fish and wildlife service for about 21 years,” Roeder said. “I have pretty extensive knowledge in partner relationships.”

Roeder said her main background is ecology and wildlife and habitat management.

According to Roeder, volunteers are extremely valuable to the refuge

“We really appreciate our friends’ groups,” Roeder said. “There is a large amount of work that goes on that the public just doesn’t realize happens.”

She went on to say the importance of volunteers grows each year as budgets are cut and funds are reduced, especially in recent years.

“As we’ve all seen in recent years, economies are getting tougher and budgets are getting tighter,” Roeder said. “We as a refuge are having a harder time meeting these kinds of needs and meeting the visitor experience needs.”

Roeder said the main goal of fish and wildlife is to conservation for future generations, and according to her that effort is working at Turnbull.
