What is your stance on Critical Race Theory
1. I don’t believe that Critical Race Theory has a place in our schools today. I think that CRT can be divisive and create more of a problem than what it claims to solve. Instead of telling our children that when anything bad happens to blame it on systemic racism, we need to focus on teaching our kids that through hard work and dedication that almost anything is possible. Taking responsibility for your actions and future is the most important thing that a child can learn. History needs to be taught to help us understand what has happened in the past.
2) Many residents have been wanting to see new schools built, especially in Airway Heights. Elementary schools are moving forward, but there is no solid talk about a middle or high school yet. Do you see a need for secondary schools in Airway? What needs to happen?
2. I was part of the long term facility planning committee. The need for a 3rd middle school right now is not the priority since CMS and Westwood both have room for growth. The High school is not large enough to be split into two schools. Doing so would result in a negative impact on programs and sports. As a result of increased enrollment, there is a need to have another secondary school built in the near future. At this time, I am unsure if a Middle school or a Middle/High school combination would be the best solution.
3) Some residents have brought up the topic of splitting the Cheney school district and adding a district for Airway Heights. Would you support this? Why or why not?
3. I used to think that this was a good idea, but not anymore. If we split the district into two districts the academic programs would suffer. We would only have half of the funding for various programs, sports, and other after school activities. Some of the programs would have to be dissolved completely. As a larger district there are problems such as transportation times, but they are outweighed by the availability of educational opportunities. If a child is on the extreme boundary edge and it makes their travel time shorter, let’s have that conversation.
