Cheney School Board Dist. 4 Seat 6 John Boerger

Please explain your stance on including Critical Race Theory?

Critical Race Theory is just that, a theory. There is no explicit instruction of CRT in the curriculum for schools in Washington state. Where it is discussed, it should be alongside all perspectives to ensure a well-rounded student learning experience. It is imperative, however, that these perspectives, while at times uncomfortable for some to hear, be shared and debated openly, and not kept away because it makes us feel poorly.

2) Many residents have been wanting to see new schools built, especially in Airway Heights.  Elementary schools are moving forward, but there is no solid talk about a middle or high school yet.  Do you see a need for secondary schools in Airway?  What needs to happen?

There is a long-term need for a secondary school in Airway Heights. However, current and near-term projections of student enrollment show us that building a secondary school in any location would leave both buildings with more than 30% vacancy rates, which is not an appropriate use of taxpayer funding. The plan put together by the Long-Range Facility Advisory Committee recommends the district purchase land for a secondary campus in one of the growth areas in the district and anticipates a bond to construct that campus in 2029.

3) Some residents have brought up the topic of splitting the Cheney school district and adding a district for Airway Heights.  Would you support this?  Why or why not?

Splitting school districts is a very long, labor-intensive process that does not, often, turn out well. The existing district is positioned to best serve the students within it’s current boundaries. Separating the two would create even more issues, from facilities to financial, for both “new” districts. It is in the best interest of the community for the Cheney Public Schools to remain intact and moving forward.
