Cheney XC competes against top teams

Cheney cross country might have had a “bye week” from Greater Spokane League competition, but the Blackhawk runners hardly sat around and relaxed.

Athletes were scattered over a pair of notable races including the Nike Hole-In-The- Wall Invite in Lakewood, Wash. and the Pasco Big Cross on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Among the 26 teams assembled at Hole-In-The-Wall were the 10th and 16th ranked teams in the nation, reported head coach Derek Slaughter.

“The boys ran valiantly moving up from 19th place in the first mile to finish 10th as a team,” Slaughter said.

Calvin Hilton ended up 30th in the among 2,512 male runners. The biggest mover on the team was Cameron Frenk who started mile-one in 138th and ended 53rd at the finish.

Cheney was second among 3A teams in the standings with most of the top 10 state ranked teams in the race.

This sets up a showdown Wednesday (Oct. 11) at Ferris for a share of the Greater Spokane League championship with Lewis and Clark.

The girls fought in the gold race for 15th place with Hannah Ward being the top finisher in 34th place. “It was a hot day and the team was affected for the unseasonable heat on the West Side,” Slaughter said.

At Pasco’s Big Cross the most notable performance was from Reese Randles who won the JV women’s race on what Slaughter described as “A tough, hilly and hot course.”
