CROSS COUNTRY

Freshmen runners put in solid runs

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – Two Liberty Lancer runners were among the Top 25 in the annual Battle for the 509 cross country race.

Competing in the Girls Freshmen Division, Allison Henegan finished 12th with a time of 22:36.80 in the 5,000-meter race.

In Freshmen Boys, Seth Chamberlin was 25th in 19:52.80.

Those were also the fastest times posted by any Lancer runner, even those in the varsity division.

FOOTBALL

Blackhawks suffer worst loss

CHENEY – TheBlackhawks suffered their worst loss of the season at Lewis and Clark left Tom Oswald Field with a 44-0 Greater Spokane League victory, Sept. 29.

Cheney was outgained 347 to 111 in total yardage with Kordell Laher leading the Blackhawks with 8 catches and 48 yards.

Amidst the struggle for their first win in 2023, "This is what I know, we will keep working as a team to get better and continue to have each other's backs," head coach Bobby Byrd wrote in an email.

Next up for Cheney (0-5) is Ridgeline (3-1) which visits Tom Oswald Field Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.

Lancers rout Bulldogs, 48-14

SPANGLE– The Liberty Lancers boys football team came away with their biggest win of the season Friday night, Sept. 29.

At home in Spangle, the Lancers (2-2) topped Kettle Falls (0-2), 48-14.

This Friday, Oct. 6, the Lancers host the undefeated Northwest Christian (Colbert) Crusaders.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Colville cruises over Medical Lake

MEDICAL LAKE – Racing to a 31-0 lead, Colville defeated Medical Lake 52-14 Sept. 29 in a Northeast A League football game at Holliday Field.

The Cardinals got another solid game from Cylas Puzycki who scored both of his team's touchdowns - one a 70-yard run - and rushed for 200 yards on 24 carries.

Medical Lake (0-3 NEA, 0-5 overall) is at Deer Park (1-2, 2-3) for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Blackhawks keep spot in tight GSL

CHENEY – The girls soccer team kept its place in the crowded Greater Spokane League standings by earning a split in its two matches last week.

Cheney is among four teams (LC, Mead and U-Hi) with 2-2 records in GSL play.

Megan Collins (3rd minute) and Ally Deutsch (46th minute) scored to lead the Blackhawks past North Central 2-0, Sept. 27 while Clara Browne recorded her fifth shutout.

Ridgeline (3-1 GSL) led 3-1 at half-time and added a pair of goals in the second half for a 5-1 win Oct. 2 in Cheney. Alex Miller's goal at the 30-minute mark briefly tied the match, which featured three goals by the Falcons' Preslie Young.

The Blackhawks (2-2) were on the road this week at Lewis and Clark Oct. 4 and Ferris, Oct. 11.

VOLLEYBALL

Cardinals win one, lose one

NINE MILE FALLS – The Cardinal girls volleyball team split its Northeast A League matches last week on the road. The Cardinals fell, 3-0, at Lakeside on Sept. 26, but edged Riverside, 3-2, in Colbert on Sept. 28.

Trinity Auckerman registered 24 digs to lead ML while Tessa Appel had eight blocks and Madi Spring six assists against the Eagles who won 25-22, 25-22 and 25-19.

Medical Lake had an early 2-0 lead with wins of 25-19 and 25-21 but Riverside rallied to tie before the Cardinals won the deciding fifth set, 15-13.

Once again Aukerman led her team with 37 digs with Spring adding 23 assists and Appel adding 17 kills.

"This team is gradually getting the hang of working through the hard parts of their mental game," head coach Hailey Van Soest wrote in an email. "They are doing very well at improving every week."

Medical Lake hosted Davenport in a non-league match Oct. 2 before returning to the road Oct. 3 at Colville and Oct. 5 at Freeman.

Eastern plays Portland State, Sac State

CHENEY - The Eagles return home this week for two conference games. EWU will host Portland State on Thursday, Oct. 5 with first serve at 6 p.m. The team then hosts Sacramento State on Saturday, Oct. 7 at noon.

This past week, EWU had a two-game road trip, playing Idaho State (Sept. 28) and Weber State (Sept. 30). Eastern started with a 3-1 win over the Bengals, but dropped the second game, 3-0, to the Wildcats.

On the conference leaderboard, Sage Brustad ranks second with 3.88 kills per set, with 225 total this season. The senior is also fourth in the Big Sky with 0.46 aces per set, while leading with 27 total aces.

Brustad posted her ninth double-double of the season against Idaho St. with 16 kills and 10 digs.

St. John girls sweep Timberwolves

ST. JOHN – The St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse Eagles (6-1, 5-1 in league) defended their home court Thursday, Sept. 28, against a struggling Tekoa-Rosalia Timberwolves team.

The Eagles won, 3-0. Set scores were 25-20, 25-17, 25-18.

After the Eagles quickly went down 4-0 in the first set, the team showed heart, and would come back to take the win, propelling them to an early lead, which they never gave up.

The Eagles win puts them comfortably in second place in Southeast 1B district standings behind undefeated Oakesdale (5-0 in district).

With the loss, the Timberwolves (2-3, 1-2 in league) moved to sixth in district.

The Eagles were led by junior outside hitter Emery Molina with 15 kills. Senior outside Kaitlyn Hough added 14 kills, 4 assists and 5 digs. Senior setter Julia Guske had 32 assists.
