Cheney hits cross country milestone

CHENEY - Cross country might look back on last week in years to come with fondness.

"We had great wins this week," head coach Derek Slaughter reported via email as the Blackhawks defeated North Central (28-29), won 22-37 against Mead for the first time ever and then Ferris by 17-44 in a Greater Spokane League meet at Mead.

Cheney had three runners finish in the top-10 in boys. Calvin Hilton's 16 minute, 21.3 second time over 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) landed him second to North Central's Micaiah Aden (16:14.05). Cameron Frenk (16:46.98/5th) and Calvin's younger brother, Samuel Hilton (17:07.44/7th) rounded out Blackhawk runners in the group.

Cheney's girls won two of three 15-41 vs. NC and 24-32 over Ferris before seeing Mead capture an 18-37 win.

Hannah Ward's 19:52.69 was fifth behind the top individual, Mead's Charlotte Cullen at 18:54.27. Karlee Pope (21:01.97/8th) and Ella Smith (21:10.04/10th) led a contingent of Blackhawks including Isabella Adaszewski (21:29.93/11th) followed by Maggie Boggs (21:30.39/12th).

"It was a windy and wet course, but the kids fought hard to get these wins," Slaughter said. "Hannah Ward really took a big step to be a front runner this day."

Cheney was "home" so-to-speak Sept. 30 for the 6th annual Battle for the 509 staged at the Spokane Polo Grounds in Airway Heights where some 90 teams and over 1,500 athletes competed.

Calvin Hilton was the top Cheney runner, finishing ninth at 15:34.7 to winner, Coeur d'Alene's Lachlan May in 15:00.4.

The Blackhawks boys were fourth with 138 points to team winner, CDA and 24. Holland's time was a new school record, topping the 15:38 of Bas Holland at the old Fairways Golf Course in 2019.

Ward (19:16.5/27th) and Pope (20:07.6/46) were top finishers for Cheney which finished 11th (214 points) to Preston, Idaho's 82.

Cheney has a bye this week in GSL but will run Saturday in the Nike Hole-in-the-Wall XC Invite at Shoreline High School.
