SPOKANE – In a showdown of top contenders in Greater Spokane League cross country between Mount Spokane and Cheney, the home-standing Wildcats had the exact recipe for success in a Sept. 20 meet.
A 1-2 finish by the Wildcats was all that was needed to counter most any Blackhawks scenario in a 27-29 win.
Kade Brownell’s 16:06.21 time for Mount Spokane led a 1-2 Wildcats’ finish with Parker Westermann next at 16:07.85.
Calvin Hilton (16:14.76) was third with Cameron Frenk (16:48.57) and Samuel Hilton (16:59.80) part of a 3-4-5 Cheney finish.
Rounding out the Top 10 was Cheney’s Ethan Martin (17:09.18/10th), but nothing could be done to counter the points the Wildcats’ earned with the 1-2 finish.
“The boys had a hard-fought loss to a great team,” Coach Derek Slaughter wrote in an email. “There were 10 iterations of the race that we would have won and the iteration that happened earned the loss by 2 (points).”
Slaughter also noted his team lost junior Brayden Martin to a broken toe in the race.
In the girls race, Hannah Ward was the top finisher for Cheney. She was sixth with a time of 20:16.51 and the only Blackhawk in the Top 10.
The Cheney girls landed in third (62 points) behind Mt. Spokane (36).
The meet also featured Joel E. Ferris and Central Valley high schools.
The Blackhawks boys topped the Saxons, 18-40, and Bears, 19-38. Cheney girls defeated Central Valley, 22-39, but lost to Ferris, 22-33.
Putting the loss behind them, Cheney focuses on a busy week that includes more Greater Spokane League competition at Mead with North Central and Ferris on Sept. 27 plus the Battle for the 509 invite Sept. 30 at the Spokane Polo Grounds.
