14 time felon busted in vehicle theft

SPOKANE – Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 14-time convicted felon Sept. 19.

Nikolas K. Haven, 30, was apprehended on multiple charges, including possession of a stolen motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance.

Haven was found passed out behind the wheel of a stolen Honda Civic, near the intersection of East Euclid Avenue and North Vista Road, records show.

The vehicle was missing a license plate, which attracted the attention of deputy Thomas Walton, records show, noting his investigation showed the vehicle was stolen.

Walton was unconscious in the vehicle, records show.

As Haven regained consciousness and observed the deputy approaching, he was instructed to exit the vehicle with his hands raised, records show. Instead of following the deputy’s commands, he looked around for possible escape routes.

Walton informed Haven that he was detained, but Haven decided to bolt, records show. A foot chase ensued, covering a distance of 50 yards before Haven tripped and rolled over.

He then followed the deputy’s commands and was safely detained, records show.

On their way to the patrol car, records show Haven said he had a warrant for his arrest and that the Honda Civic was stolen.

A check of Haven’s information revealed that he had an active warrant for his arrest on an identity theft charge, records show.

During a search of the vehicle, Walton found four small blue pills containing fentanyl, records show.

He also found a straw used for smoking illicit substances after checking Haven’s pants pockets

Furthermore, reports say a loaded Hi-Point pistol, with the chamber empty, was retrieved from the passenger’s side floor.

A check of the vehicle’s VIN confirmed the Honda was reported stolen Sept. 17, records show.

Haven allegedly confessed to the theft of the vehicle, but provided no details about its acquisition, records show. Furthermore, he admitted the presence of a 9 mm pistol on the passenger side floorboard, citing a need for self-protection.
