Man arrested after shooting two family members

VALLEYFORD - One man has been booked into Spokane County Jail on two charges of first-degree attempted murder, and he remains there with a $500,000 bond.

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Major Crime Detectives continue investigating The Aug. 8 shooting in the 8900 block of S. Windmill Drive at approximately 10:10 am.

Deputies arrived at the location, finding two adult victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

They were provided with medical treatment and transported to a hospital for additional care in what is believed to be serious but stable condition.

Reports show through the investigation deputies learned the incident began as an argument involving the suspect, 22-year-old Charlie J. Birkland, and his mother and stepfather at the home where they all live.

The volatile situation quickly escalated, and reports show Birkland armed himself with a handgun, shooting both victims before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

At approximately 10:35 am, a responding deputy contacted Birkland in the parking lot of Spokane County Fire Station 81, 6117 S. Palouse Highway according to records.

Records show Birkland was cooperative, followed commands, and was quickly detained without incident.

He was transported to the Public Safety Building to be interviewed by Major Crimes Investigators.

Major Crimes Detective C. Ennis developed probable cause to charge Birkland with two counts of first degree attempted murder.

At last check, both victims were in serious but stable condition.

This remains an active investigation, and no additional information is available at this time.
