Sunset Park project to cost $7,000 more

Funds will help cover costs to install power outlets in park

AIRWAY HEIGHTS — The City Council unanimously approved a $7,000 increase to the Sunset Park revamp design project budget at its regular meeting Aug. 7.

The design project was approved in November of 2022 for $26, 500 and addressed safety concerns.

The current condition of the park pathway system warranted the development of a design project to repair these pathways.

The addition to the design scope of work includes adding electrical relay station and infrastructure.

“We always end up having to rent electrical generators and electrical relays for events like Airway Heights Days and Christmas events. Some of the food vendors require power; the stage requires power, as does the equipment for other items,” J.C. Kennedy, Parks, Recreation & Community Services Director, said.

“So we are looking to assess the cost of adding electrical power stations and infrastructure for the support of events and so forth,” Kennedy concluded.

The safety concerns were confirmed by design company Sherry Pratt Van Voorhis during the investigation phase of the original design project, but also ADA compliance issues were identified.

During the September 2022 Park Advisory Board meeting, board members requested Kennedy reach out to the city’s landscape architect to see what would be required to accomplish project goals.

During the May 2023 Park Advisory Board meeting, the members requested that Kennedy inquire about adding power stations that could be used during Airway Heights Days and other events in Sunset Park.

Sherry Pratt Van Voorhis Landscape Architects contacted Coffman Engineers and received a quote in the amount of $7,000.
