City to spend almost $20,000 for equipment
CHENEY — The City Council unanimously approved a resolution Aug. 8 to purchase two additional body cameras for recently hired police officers.
The Multi Bay Dock Bundle, purchased from Axon Enterprises, will cost $19,425.96, an amount to be dispersed over three budget cycles in 2023-25.
Additionally, the cost is being added to a previously existing contract between the city and Axon which was signed in September 2021.
The original contract included the purchase of 16 body cameras, but the hiring of two additional officers has made it necessary to purchase two more cameras.
Axon Enterprises Inc. will provide the additional cameras and include those cameras into the existing contract for the remaining 38 months of that contract.
“The expensive part is not the equipment itself. It is the cloud storage (evidence.com, provided by Axon), maintenance, the integration into the database and so forth,” Chief Rick Beghtol said.
“The other thing that these cameras are capable of is being synced with the Tasers. Whenever there is a deployment of the Taser, the camera system records a time stamp,” continued Beghtol.
Beghtol said that, in order to be in compliance with state law, the new officers need these cameras.
Axon offers a product bundle which includes cloud data storage, the Taser sync and other items, which is cheaper than buying those items piecemeal.
