Medical emergency causes semi crash

Hazardous chemicals leaked from truck

UPDATE: One lane of eastbound I-90 was reopened at approximately 3:00 p.m. and the second lane was reopened shortly after 9:00 p.m.

I-90 is now fully open, and traffic is not being detoured through Cheney.

TYLER - Eastbound I-90 is currently closed near Tyler due to a hazardous materials leak, according to Washington State Patrol.

According to reports, Dennis D Schwindt, 62, from Gillette, Wyoming had a heart attack while driving, which caused a crash.

According to state patrol, the crash involved one semi-truck.

Police also say hazardous materials including ammonium nitrite and diesel spilled from the truck's tank.

Reports show the crash happened at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 8.

Police say the driver of the semi-truck was driving west on I-90 when he suffered a medical emergency, and crossed over both east and west bound lanes.

After crossing through the freeway median, the truck was sent airborne, then it flipped and came to a stop in a ditch along the freeway.

Records show the driver of the truck was wearing a seatbelt, but was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Police say he is lucky to be alive.

Detours are in place at State Route 904. Troopers are on scene.

The Department of Ecology is on scene and crews are working on transferring the rest of the liquid from the truck.

State patrol says the diesel is cleaned up, but the hazmat team is still cleaning up materials that leaked into the soil.

It's unknown how long EB I-90 will remain closed at Tyler, but state patrol says they hope to have the highway fully open around 10:00 a.m.

This story happened after we went to press on Aug. 8.
