Harry Potter day brings magic to farmer's market

Themed market always a big hit

SPOKANE VALLEY – The magic of Hogwarts took over Spokane Valley when Harry Potter and friends visited the farmer's market on July 28 at CenterPlace, 2426 N Discovery Place.

Among all the shops, tents and vendors area residents could find magic wands and other magical goods.

According to Katy Lee, who organizes the Spokane Valley Farmers Market, the themed events are always a big hit.

"The turnout is great," Lee said about the themed market. "Harry Potter day is always a big hit because it's popular with kids and families in general."

The market is open every Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. from June 2 through September 15.

The Spokane Valley Farmer's Market was officially started in 2019, and has grown strong roots since.

Cultivating partnerships in the community has been one of the main goals, so choosing a central location has been an important factor in that.

Markets are also in place to help bring an alternative to grocery food. They help directly connect farmers and vendors with the consumers, and also means the food bypasses all of the processing and packaging according to the Farmer's Market Coalition.

Hosting the market at CenterPlace gives an open location that is easily accessible to families, and keeps the action close to local conveniences and amenities.

Thousands of people browsed the food and vendor goods on display, and then got a chance to take photos with Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley while adventuring through the market.

Free kids' activities were also on site through a program called Kernal as they are every Friday.

Kernal is powered by Numerica that teaches kids about nutrition and exercise. Any participating kids also received a small voucher to purchase produce.

A lot of regional markets are in full swing right now, and National Farmer's Market Week is coming up quickly.

This runs through the week of August 6 through August 12, and is an annual celebration that highlights the vital role farmers markets play in our nation's food system. A celebration running in its 24th year.
