Yaeger leads race for City Council seat

SPOKANE VALLEY – Jessica Yaeger was sitting in first place after the initial tally of ballots returned in the Aug. 1 primary election for City Council Position No. 2.

As of Tuesday night, Yaeger had 5,788 votes, 51.85%. She was ahead of Rachel Briscoe with 2,897 votes, 25.95%, and Adam Smith with 2,374 votes, 21.26%.

Only Smith could be reached for comment Tuesday night.

“I’m very happy. I have spent zero dollars on marketing,” he said. “So, I am pretty excited. This isn’t something I had planned on being the first thing in my life, but I want to fight for what I think is right.”

Smith said getting more diversity on the City Council is a priority for him.

“I am happy that so many people supported me without me having to buy their votes,” Smith said.

Spokane County elections officials counted 11,420 ballots out of 68,292 mailed to voters within the jurisdiction of the Position No. 2 district.

Returned ballots included 5 overvotes and 251 undervotes.

Initial turnout is 16.72%.

Only the Top 2 candidates advance to the Nov. 7 general election.
