Jaripeo set for Cheney

CHENEY – It’s not your everyday rodeo.

But Jaripeo Rodeo and Dance will feature a whole lotta of Western action Sunday, July 30, in the 14310 S. State Highway 904 arena north of the city.

Jaripeo is a traditional Mexican rodeo, with a tradition that dates back to the 16th Century. The name is derived from the Spanish word “jaripear,” which means to lasso.

“This is something different that you don’t see in Spokane and Cheney,” Jaripeo spokeswoman Claudia Delgado said of the event that begins at 4:30 p.m. “It’s a fun experience.”

According to Delgado, Jaripeo mixes bull riding and traditional Mexican music.

Ten bulls and riders will take to the rodeo arena and four traditional Mexican musical groups will perform during the five-plus-hour event.

Professional Mexican rodeo cowboy Duende Decolima will be among the competitors.

The bands include Banda Mobil, Los Hermanos Michel, La Nobleza De Aguililla and Banda Perla Azteca.

Traditional Mexican dances will accompany the music; and traditional Mexican cuisine will be available.

A mechanical bull is also available for children, and every adult ticket holder is entered into a raffle.

Gates open at 3 p.m.; children younger than 10 are admitted free of charge.

“This is the third year coming to Cheney,” Delgado said. “Everything is very classic Mexican. Everyone has fun.”
