Airway Heights issues water use restrictions

Well undergoing maintenance

CHENEY FREE PRESS – The city has asked residents to conserve water when possible starting July 21, as one of the city wells is currently undergoing maintenance.

The topic was also addressed during the July 24 city council session by Public Works Director Kevin Anderson.

“As you all likely know I was on vacation last week,” Anderson said. “We had an issue with our well where we are having a difficult time getting it online. So, it has to undergo some maintenance.”

Anderson said he was appreciative of City Manager Albert Tripp issuing a level 2 water shortage and conservation measure.

Residents and business owners are being asked to water their lawns and landscaping on alternating days, and to only water before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.

Watering in the cooler part of the day prevents water from evaporating too quickly, so the water used isn’t wasted.

People living at even-numbered addresses are being asked to water on even dates, while odd-numbered addresses are asked to water on odd-numbered dates.

Lawn care can also impact how much water is used, and the city is asking residents to keep lawns a little taller than normal to help reduce evaporation as well.

Airway Heights still buys water from Spokane due to PFAS contamination discovered in 2017.

A timeline has not been established for the repairs to be finished.
