Governor visits Camp Hope site

SPOKANE VALLEY — Governor Jay Inslee visited what was formerly known as “Camp Hope” and commented on the progress of the relocation and cleanup effort on June 30.

At About 11:20 p.m. the Governor arrived at the site, 3298 E. Pacific Ave.

Inslee met with representatives from several community outreach organizations, including Jewels Helping Hands and Compassion Addiction Treatment.

Inslee said that the culmination of many months of work is due to the efforts of several organizations and people, and he commended those who were representing participants in the project.

“Remember, we didn’t just move these people in need down the road, we relocated them to better facilities where they can get the help they need.” Inslee said.

Inslee commented on the amazing awork which Jewels Helping Hands and Compassion Addiction Treatment had done to facilitate at different stages of the project, and reflected that anything short of the comprehensive program that had been developed would have been “putting a Band-Aid” on a complex social issue.

“This problem started because the city could not deal with the number of people who were at city hall, that’s the reason Camp Hope started,” Inslee said.

He continued to say that “chasing people off” would have been a mistake, and that relocating, or finding treatment, or both, for these individuals was the right choice for everyone.
