Plane crashes at Clear Lake

CHENEY – An ultralight aircraft crashed into Clear Lake on June 23.

According to a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office report, the pilot was trying to land his experimental aircraft when it cart-wheeled into the lake.

The report failed to provide the name, age and hometown of the pilot, who escaped without injuries, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The airplane was pulled out of the water later in the day, the report said.

The Sheriff’s Office and National Transportation and Safety Board are investigating the crash.

Starbucks shooting suspect arrested

CHENEY – A man was arrested and booked into Spokane County Jail on June 16 for first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault in connection with a March shooting.

Benjamin J. Hill, 41, is being held on $1 million bail, records show, noting he could face additional charges.

Hill is charged in connection with a March 4 targeted shooting at the Cheney Starbucks, 2816 First St., records show.

A victim advised their vehicle was shot while waiting in the drive thru, records show. Cheney and Eastern Washington University police arrived on scene within minutes and confirmed there was no injuries to the victim or employees inside the establishment.

A single bullet had struck the occupied vehicle, records show.

Council Oks intersection work

CHENEY — The City Council voted unanimously to move ahead with reconstruction of the intersection of state highway 904 and Second Street during its June 27 meeting.

The project is expected to cost $28,400, records show. It would include demolition of existing asphalt and road base excavation to a depth of 11 feet, according to Public Works Director Todd Ableman.

Five Star Concrete submitted the bid that also includes rebuilding the road base, installation of storm-water gutters and finishing with concrete.

Headrick sworn in as superintendent

MEDICAL LAKE – Kim Headrick, the newly chosen superintendent for Medical Lake took the oath of office via Zoom during the June 27 Medical Lake School Board Meeting.
