Medical Lake alumnus named superintendent
MEDICAL LAKE - A Medical Lake alumnus has been hired as the new School District superintendent effective July 1.
Resident and former assistant superintendent of teaching and learning Kim Headrick, 52, is looking forward to tackling new challenges in her position as superintendent.
"It is a real honor to give back to the community that gave me my start," the Class of 1989 alumnus said.
She was assistant superintendent for approximately 10 years and brings a wide range of experiences to the new position.
"When the board was made aware that Tim Ames was retiring, they interviewed me to assess my availability and determined that I was a viable candidate," Headrick said.
Headrick will be finishing a doctorate of education degree at Gonzaga University in August.
"We are finishing the development of our five-year strategic plan," Headrick said. "So, the shift for me is really about continuing the projects that were most effective from previous administrations and planning for the future health of the community."
Headrick graduated from Medical Lake high school in 1989 and earned an undergraduate degree from University of Washington before moving to Las Vegas, Nev. While there, she taught and became a middle school administrator.
"I moved back to Washington about 10 years ago," she said. "Our retiring superintendent began a lot of projects that supported our military families and that's something we will be continuing work on.
"It's important to me to listen and learn from the community, and doing that especially in the first stages of the upcoming year; engaging with the students and our great faculty members and really focusing on what we can do to improve."
Headrick will replace current Superintendent Tim Ames, who is retiring June 30.
Ames announced Headrick as the new school leader during graduation.
"You know, she sat right where you all are now back in 1989," Ames said to the 2023 Cardinal graduates. "I'm sure she was sitting out there thinking I'm gonna be superintendent one day."
