Cheney's AA American Legion team mix of Blackhawks' varsity, JV
CHENEY – During its Greater Spokane League season in 2023 the Cheney Blackhawks' baseball team finished third in league play and had a significant post-season run.
The plan during summer in American Legion play for the Summer Hawks AA team to continue to fine tune things for 2024.
"I am doing advanced double A which is more like your varsity team going into play," Summer Hawks head coach Rob Beamer said.
While first-team All-GSL players Quinn Hubbs (Spokane Expos)and Jamel Chabot (Cannons) will be playing at a higher level, the Summer Hawks still have some notable talent hanging on.
"It's not gonna' be my full varsity team," Beamer said, but there's a half-dozen and two with some recognized work in GSL play.
Both junior pitcher Tate Heuschkel and sophomore Brayden Martin were picked to Honorable Mention All-GSL and each are part of group of six Blackhawks' varsity players who are part a team that through play on June 7 are 7-1.
Coleman Randles, Miles Hoover, Grayson Burton and Jacob Ulrich are other members of the varsity with the Summer Hawks.
"I'll bring up a few of the JV players from this year and mix them in with some of the other varsity players and we play a 25-game season," Beamer said.
That JV contingent includes Dawes Hanson, Jace Vega, Nolan McKinnon, Jake Swanson and Tank Best.
This year's Summer Hawks AA team can be followed via the GameChanger app which has schedule, roster and live game reports. They play home games at Cheney High School.
The 2022 Summer Hawks finished with a 17-17 record.
