Summer Hawks streak at four

The Cheney Summer Hawks AA American Legion improved its early-season win streak to four with three wins last week, all on the road.

Cheney got the bats rolling in a 17-5 win at West Valley, May 30 and following that defeated the Titans 6-2 (June 1) and Lewis and Clark 5-3 (June 5).

Three Summer Hawks, including Tate Heuschkel (3-for-3, 1 RBI), Jace Vega (2-3, 1 RBI) and Nolan McKinnion (2-5, 3 RBI) were part of a 10-hit effort from Cheney at West Valley. The Summer Hawks built a 10-0 lead by the third and then added a five-run seventh.

Jake Swanson went three innings, allowing three runs on no hits while striking out five. Brayden Martin and Vega helped to close out the game in relief.

The Summer Hawks scored in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win over the Titans as Heuschkel won for a second time in the week, striking out five.

Dawes Hanson, Jake Swanson and Jacob Ulrich each had two hits for Summer Hawks.

Cheney scored twice it its first at-bat but it was a three-run fourth inning that clinched its win over LC at Hart Field this past Monday.

While limited to just seven hits, the Summer Hawks got runners in scoring position with their base stealing with four thefts. One play, a double steal, got Cheney an important run in the fourth.

"We planned it if they threw back to get the second base runner both runners would advance," head coach Rob Beamer wrote in a text message.

Miles Hoover got the win by going five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out 11.
