CHENEY – The possible journey back to the Senior American Legion baseball state tournament for the Spokane Cannons has at least gotten off in the right direction.

The AAA Legion team that draws heavily from Cheney and Medical Lake to fill its roster has begun the season with a 4-0 league record - 5-1 overall - following the start of ALB Spokane competition.

"It's a pretty good start for not playing to the best of our abilities," head Coach Austin Sharp wrote in a text message. "We haven't run the bases well, played terrible defense and are 4-0 in league; we're knocking the rust off."

The Cannons swept a pair of wild games with Gonzaga Prep, winning in walk-off fashion 5-4 at Holliday Field May 23 and then traveling to Spokane and winning 8-5, May 24. They finished off the week with a home-and-home series win over Shadle Park, 8-5 and 10-2 on the road May 25-26.

Trailing 4-2 in their last at-bat against G-Prep, Spokane made it 4-3 before Medical Lake's Taylor Oliver grounded into a fielder's choice, which coupled with an error, drove in both Clayton Wood and Carson Jeffries from Cheney.

Jeffries was 4-for-4 in the game, including a double.

The Cannons rolled that offense over into the following night taking a 4-0 lead at Prep, but needing another four runs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

Leadoff batter Kaleb Cain from Medical Lake got things going when he was hit by a pitch.

Jamel Chabot from Cheney and Northwest Christian's Jacob Bell followed with base hits with Bell's driving in Cain for a 5-3 lead. Chabot and Bell advanced on a passed ball and Oliver drove them in with a single for a 7-3 lead. A sacrifice by Cheney's Isaac Nessbitt drove in the final run.

At home vs. Shadle, the Cannons took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two runs and then added insurance with three in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the win.

That fifth inning surge was driven by doubles by Griffin Marshall and Carson Jeffries and a single by Taylor Oliver.

Jacob Bell smacked a home run as part of his 3-for-4 game while Caden Day and Jeffries all had multiple hits for Spokane with two apiece.

Spokane put up four runs in the sixth inning the following game with Jeffries, Day, Jamel Chabot and Bell driving in runs.

Bell was on the mound went six innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out nine.
