Luminary display for Memorial Day

LIBERTY LAKE – Hundreds of area residents made it out to Pavilion Park over Memorial Day weekend to look at the luminary display.

Luminaries were sponsored by members of the community, and the funds raised will go to help pay for the Inland Northwest Honor Flight and the Liberty Lake Hometown Heroes Project.

The honor flight works to provide flight transport for military veterans to travel to Washington D.C. and pay homage to the memorials in place.

The hometown heroes project honors those fallen soldiers, Veterans, and active duty military by making banners that are hung from the city streetlights by Avista. These banners will remain on display from Memorial Day to Veteran's Day.

According to the club each luminary represents a fallen hero, a service member who has given the ultimate sacrifice.

The community was also there to support the cause during the Memorial Day breakfast, as dozens of hungry patrons lined up for some patriotic pancakes. According to event guest, Shirley Townsend, these events really can help the families in their grieving process.

"I have lost my grandfather and uncle in wars," Townsend said. "Two of the bravest men I have ever known, and even if I don't get to see them anymore I can see the result of their sacrifice in the freedoms our communities enjoy."

"I can look forward to the camaraderie of knowing and befriending others that have lost loved ones in military service," she added.
