Blackhawks season wrap-up
Cheney Fastpitch softball was eliminated in the second round of the district tournament and finished the season with a 9-12 record after a fifth-place finish in league at 9-8.
Head coach Gary Blake reported that Mia Ashcroft led the team in hitting with a .535 batting average.
“Freshman pitcher, Maya De La Cruz, improved during the course of the season, and I am expecting big things from her as she matures and gains more experience,” Blake wrote in an email.
Players who made all-GSL were Tatum Sloan (2nd team infield) and Ashcroft (2nd team outfield). Sedona Ericson (outfield) and Rhyan Kucirka (catcher) were honorable mention.

GOLF:
Medical Lake golf earns honors
Medical Lake’s Kali Rowe is participating in the WIAA 1A state golf tournament at Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis, Wash. Madi Spring is on the alternate list to participate with competition starting May 22.
Regardless of how Rowe does at state, she will carry home some notable honors from the Northeast A League.
Rowe was named District MVP after finishing in first place at district championships and the All-League team. In addition, at the Kalispel Golf Banquet, Rowe was also named Player-of-the-Year.
Also receiving a distinguishing honor was head coach Jerry Ornelas who was named Coach-of-the-Year.
“I owe that honor to the young ladies that played for me this year,” Ornelas wrote in an email. “They did an amazing job. I appreciate what they have accomplished and cannot thank them enough.”

TENNIS:
Cardinal tennis stopped seeking state berths
Medical Lake tennis sent several players to regional play atMead High School, May 19-20.
Mason Satko and Noah Young, the Cardinals’ No. 2 doubles played two matches, both having to go into a third set with tie breakers but ended up losing both matches.
Josh Burt and Ryen Gibby at No. 1 doubles won their first match but ended up losing the next two to be knocked out from going to state. “Again, very close matches with three sets and tie breakers,” head coach Matt Houn wrote in an email.
Isabelle Rhoads, ML’s No. 1 singles girl, had to play one match, a play in to get to state, but came up short.
“I was very pleased with both the girls and boys performance this year,” Houn said.

Cheney doubles duo falls in districts
Cheney’s Victoria Baycroft/Angelica Goold won their first District 8 doubles tennis match last week, but were ousted in their road to state in the next.
The Blackhawks double entry won in three sets against Mount Spokane, coming back after dropping the first set to win the second and third sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-3).
“In round two, they lost a tough match against Mead (5-7, 2-6), but played some of the most competitive tennis I’ve seen from them all season,” head coach Linnea Love wrote in an email.
The post-season play is a snapshot of the season Love said. “We are very proud of their work and accomplishments as they have improved a great deal as doubles partners over the course of the season.”
