SPOKANE VALLEY - Competition at the Sub-District track meet at Central Valley High School last week left Cheney track and field Coach Derek Slaughter with a great deal of confidence in advance of regionals and.
"We had a great Sub-District meet," Slaughter wrote in an email in advance of competition May 19-20 at Fran Rish Stadium in Richland.
Both the boys and girls 4X400 ran their way into contention for state, Slaughter said.
Braxton Hinton, Teagan O'Callaghan, Kordell Laher and Cameron Johnson clocked a 3:26.38 time and finished second.
The 4:05.42 for Samantha Habegger, Karlee Pope, Hannah Ward and Carissa Hinton landed the girls third.
"They both ran major PRs in this meet and really helped us finish it with a bang," Slaughter said.
Hinton should also qualify for state in the 100, 200 and 4X100, he said.
Alma Smith, who earlier won a state diving championship for Cheney, was second in pole vault and is another favorite to advance to state in Tacoma, May 25-27.
Calvin Hilton's 9:24.58, a PR, for second-place for Cheney in the 3,200-meter and sends him to the next round.
Carissa Hinton ran a 1:00.93 PR in the 400 and will run in Richland, eying a slot at state.
Slaughter pointed to Clara Brown in the discus as well as Tess King, Shauna Elliot, Macey Richards and Mariah Hill who "all have a (state) chance."
"The weather looks really hot for this weekend meet in the Tri-Cities," Slaughter said. "We will see if they move the meet to early a.m. or late p.m."
