MEDICAL LAKE — Three Cardinal golfers participated in a unique opportunity to play one of the region’s most revered and iconic courses in the Spokane Area High School Golf Championship at the Kalispel Golf and Country Club on May 11.
Kali Rowe and Madi Spring represented the Cardinal girls; Mason Ashenbrenner the local boys.
The tournament featured 162 competitors from 42 schools.
Rowe shot a 93 and Spring a 114 on the 73-par layout for women. Ashenbrenner finished with a 98 where par is listed at 72.
“It was fun playing a course that most of us never get to play,” Rowe said in comments provided by Coach Jerry Ornelas. “The trees were in full bloom which brought a nice calmness to the game of golf.”
Even if her game was not the best, “I could look up and appreciate what was around me,” Rowe said.. “It was a wonderful round of golf and I am extremely grateful to have gotten to play it.”
One of the challenging holes on the course is No. 16, where the tee-box sits on a hill and then one must drive over the course access road.
“Hole 16 was fun,” Rowe said. “The drive was fun because there wasn’t much trouble, so I could just swing away and see how far I could hit it. My next shot was blind, so I had to leave the future of the ball up to the golf gods..”
For Spring, “It took some confidence to make sure my drive was good but after I crossed all the obstacles, I was good to go and it was a straight shot to the green.”
