Cheney to study homelessness

CHENEY — The City Council voted unanimously to approve resolution F-146, its “Homelessness Initiative,” during a regular meeting May 9.

The initiative authorizes an elected member of the council to participate in the study of homelessness in the area and to come up with individualized action plans.

“As you’ve heard here tonight, homelessness is a big issue,” City Administrator Mark Schuller said. “A group called Spokane Unite, being led by three volunteers, is working to pull all the different communities in the region to study and tackle this issue head-on.”

The resolution notes Spokane Unite is initiating an effort to establish an independent authority tasked with making strategic, coordinated decisions and investments to address homelessness.

There is a 90-day due diligence period to evaluate options.
