Cheney girls headed to playoffs

CHENEY – The Blackhawks girls fastpitch softball team concluded Greater Spokane League play last week with a win over Gonzaga Prep.

The victory ended a three-game losing streak and propelled the Blackhawks into post-season play.

On May 2, Cheney lost to Central Valley, 18-8. Then the May 5 game against North Central was postponed due to weather.

After that, Cierra Morton had a 3-for-5 day batting with a pair of home runs and seven RBIs in a 24-18 win at G-Prep for Cheney. The Blackhawks scored six runs in the fifth and nine runs in the sixth to erase a 12-7 Bullpups’ lead.

Tatum Sloan had three extra-base hits — two doubles and a triple — as she went 4 for 4 with four runs scored and five RBIs for Cheney.

At Central Valley, the Bears rallied from an early 3-1 deficit, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the second and added another five in their next at-bat to lead 15-4. Tavia Cailing had a pair of RBIs for Cheney.

Leading hitters for last week were Mia Ashcroft (.833), Rhyan Kucirka (.750), Sloan (.667) and Morton (.556). “I only wish we had that kind of offensive production every week,” head coach Gary Blake wrote in an email.

Cheney is 9-10 overall and fifth place in the GSL (9-8).

They are the District 8 3A No. 7 seed and played on the road at top-seeded Kennewick on May 9 for a first-round playoff game.

The newspaper went to press before the Cheney-Kennewick game began.
