Cheney track and field picked up a number of event wins, but team victories eluded the Blackhawks April 27 at Central Valley in a Greater Spokane League meet.
In the boys’ competition, Central Valley topped Cheney 85.5-59.5 and NC prevailed 74-71. Central Valley won 95.5-49.5 in the girls while North Central edged Cheney 77-73.
Braxton Hinton won in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, setting a personal record with a time of 11:10 in the 100.
Calvin Hilton’s 4 minute, 25.30 second winning time was also a PR in the 1600-meters and Alma Smith captured the pole vault with a 13-foot mark and yet another PR.
Cheney’s girls had success in throwing events as Clara Browne’s 105-09 easily outdistanced the competition in the discus. Lacey Holsten was third at 93-07 and a PR.
Tess King threw the javelin 97-02, a school record, leading a 1-2-3 finish for Cheney. Mariah Hill (97-01) and Browne (91-00) were the other Blackhawks.
Cheney also swept the high jump with Tess King’s 5-foot even a PR. Macey Richards (4-10) and Shauna Elliott (4-08) made up the rest of the top-3. April Passey, a freshman, won the triple-jump with a 32-11 while Marie Mayfield (30-07.50) was third.
Caitlin Shaffer continues to hone her times in the 800-meter wheelchair clocking a 4:38.81 PR.
Other boys’ finishes at CV included Curran Moore who turned in a 6-foot school record in the high jump to finish second to Brandon Gutzwiler’ 6-04 with Central Valley.
The Blackhawks’ Cole Palmer was runner up in the javelin at 147-01 to the 150-03 of CV’s Canyon Smith.
Freshman Mason Stinson turned a 43.94 to finish second to North Central’s Cameron Dewey (41.55) in the 300-meter hurdles.
Lucas Matos PR of 10:05.35 was second by an eyelash in the 3200 to Levi Aden from North Central at 10:04.77.
Cameron Johnson (53.65aPR) was third for Cheney in the 400 meters. Travis Horn from NC won it with a 51.67.
Emma Ayers landed a 50.65 PR, good for third while Cheney’s Kaylee Kohlman (51.11) was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles for the girls. Kohlman’s 17.98 earned her a third in the 100 hurdles while Natalie Richards clocked a fourth-place at 18.00.
Karlee Pope finished third and established a PR in the 1600 meters at 5:38.70 with CV’s Nicole Bissell winning in 5:00.25, all behind Jordis Harmer’s 16.99 with North Central.
Tenaya Belsby turned a 2:27.11 and PR in the 800-meters, good for third behind NC’s Bissell at 2:19.78.
In addition to league competition, Cheney traveled to Bellevue for the Shoreline Invitational on April 29.
Ethan Martin’s 4:37.51 and a PR for Cheney in the 1600-meters was good for third at Shoreline. Teagan O’Callaghan, Braxton Hinton, Kordell Laher and Tucker VanWormer combined for a 43.67 and fifth place in the 4X100. Skyline’s 41.80 won it.
Macey Richards recorded a 5-00 and third place in the high jump for Cheney and Tenaya Belsby was fourth for the Blackhawks with a PR of 12:21.63 in the 3200.
Cheney travels to Gonzaga Prep May 4 where they face the Bullpups and Lewis and Clark in the final GSL meet before the start of districts on May 10.
