Man sentenced in fatal Cheney-Spokane crash

SPOKANE — A man involved in a fatal car crash on Cheney-Spokane Road near Latah Creek on Aug 4, 2021, was sentenced to 78 months in jail on April 28, 2023, according to court case documents.

Rayce Kent, man 21, has been sentenced on one count of vehicular homicide for his role in the death of Nyckolas Davis, who was killed in a car crash on Aug. 4, 2021.

On the night of the incident, Kent was driving a 2002 Lexus with Davis and one other passenger in the rear of the car.

At approximately 6:45 p.m. the car left the roadway and rolled near the intersection of South Sherman Road, according to Spokane County Sheriff’s Office reports.

The report said the Lexus was traveling toward Spokane at a high rate of speed, failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway, rolling several times before coming to a stop.

Both Kent and a juvenile male in the front seat sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Davis was severely injured and later pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the medical examiner, Davis suffered blunt force injuries to his head, torso and extremities during the accident.

traffic unit investigators processing the scene noted an estimated 500-foot skid mark and debris trail along the vehicle’s path. The severity of the crash and evidence that Kent was possibly impaired led to investigators obtaining a search warrant for a sample of his blood.

After his release from the hospital, Rayce was arrested and booked into Spokane County Jail on charges of vehicular homicide.
