SOCCER:
Cardinals rolling
Medical Lake’s soccer team seems to be finding its strengths just at the right time?
Following an 0-7 start while competing against both teams form the Greater Spokane League, as well as 1A powers, the Cardinals have now won three of their last four and five of seven.
Last week produced a 2-1 record where on April 17 the Cardinals defeated Riverside 6-1, won in a shootout 2-1 at home to Lakeside (April 19) before a one-sided 10-0 loss at Northwest Christian, April 20.
Kaden Rudy had four goals and Mavrick Rasmussen scored twice in the Riverside win as the Cards scored three times in both halves.
In a rematch of a 6-2 loss at Lakeside, April 15, Medical Lake first forced the contest into two overtimes and then a shootout won by the Cardinals 4-2.
Rudy had ML’s goal in regulation plus one in the shootout. Other Cardinal scorers in the shootout were Rasmussen, Sam Ornelas and Alex Marsh. Rasmussen also played in goal in the shootout.
“In the shootout we put Mavrick in goal and he blocked the first and fourth PK shots, then shot and made his,” assistant coach Dan Collins reported in an email.
Locked in a battle for the third seed in the upcoming Northeast A League playoffs, Medical Lake closes out the regular season this week. Deer Park played at Medical Lake, April 25. They host Newport, April 27 (4 p.m.) and travel to Colville, April 29 for a noon start.
