Bullpups rally, win with walk-off run in bottom of eighth
SPOKANE — Cheney’s undefeated start of the 2023 baseball season has come to an end, but the Blackhawks may have just started a new one.
After starting with seven consecutive wins, and going 5-0 in Greater Spokane League play, Cheney lost its first game 7-6, on March 31 at Gonzaga Prep.
The Blackhawks later split an April 3 doubleheader at Central Valley, losing 7-3 before winning the second game 2-1.
At Gonzaga Prep, the Blackhawks’ win streak came to an end on a nasty weather day on the last day of March in a contest played with periods of rain and blustery winds.
After Cheney built a 6-3 lead in the top of the seventh, G-Prep rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie.
They got the walk-off victory at Bullpup Field when Grant Yost stroked a single in the bottom of the eighth to drive in the deciding run.
Among the Blackhawks’ six scattered hits were doubles from Quinn Hubbs and Jamel Chabot.
Earlier in the week, Cheney topped G-Prep at home 4-2, scoring the deciding runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Carter McPherson had an RBI on a 3-for-3 day at the plate, including a double. Hubbs went the distance on the mound, struck out 10, also driving in a run.
The Blackhawks are now 6-2 in GSL play and 8-2 overall with their next games following spring break.
Mount Spokane visits April 11.
Cheney is then on the road April 13 at Mount Spokane and April 14 at University.
Both begin at 4 p.m.
