CHENEY — The Avista Foundation, a community investment program of Avista Corp., has provided $25,000 to the Cheney Depot Project, according to a Depot Society press release.
The goals of saving and re-purposing a historic landmark in Cheney; bringing a focal point for economic impact into the historic center of town; and expanding cultural heritage opportunities through history interpretation on the Depot site, are in alignment with the Avista Foundation’s priorities for economic and cultural vitality, according to the release.
The grant money will be used for the purchase of energy-efficient exterior doors in the baggage room and freight room, and in a newly-created opening from the interior of the depot into the outdoor waiting area.
Initial budgeting for the project took place in 2018 and 2019, and work began in 2020.
“We have completed substantial portions of the exterior and interior rehabilitation, but are facing financial challenges, as critical materials shortages and skyrocketing shipping costs have impacted the project. Actual costs to date are roughly 20% higher than original budget estimates.” According to the press release.
The Avista Foundation initially warded a two $25,000 grants in 2019 and 2022 which helped to relocate the Depot and repair and stabilize the building exterior.
