SOCCER:

Cheney win streak halted

Lewis and Clark broke a scoreless halftime tie and went on to go home with a 3-0 Greater Spokane League soccer victory March 27 in Cheney.

The Tigers’ win snapped a three-game winning streak for the Blackhawks’ who earlier in the week earned victories against East Valley (4-0, March 20), West Valley (1-0, March 21) and University (1-0, March 24).

No details were available from the East Valley match. But in the other wins, the Blackhawks got goals from Nic Alderson vs. West Valley in the 75th minute and in the 52nd minute by James Guske at U-Hi.

Cheney, (2-1 GSL, 6-1 overall) played at Mt. Spokane March 29 and will then play a pair of non-league matches, April 6 vs. a CHS Alumni team and April 10 when they host Moses Lake at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL:

Cheney opens GSL play with loss, wins

Cheney softball got its GSL season off to a successful start last week, going 2-1, reported head coach Gary Blake. 

After suffering a 14-7 loss to Mt. Spokane on March 20, Cheney rebounded to beat Ferris 17-3, March 22, and 10-4 against Lewis and Clark, March 24. 

“Weather conditions on Friday were pretty bad, but we managed to persevere,” Blake wrote in an email.

 Leading hitters for the week were Sedona Ericson (.545 batting average with a double and 3 RBI’s) and Mia Ashcroft (.500 batting average with a double, a home run, and 7 RBI’s).

Cheney played at Ridgeline, March 27, winning 13-3, and improving to 3-1 in GSL play and 3-3 overall. Cheney was home to meet University, March 29 and will be at Mead, March 30 at 4 p.m. before taking spring break off.

TENNIS:

Blackhawk girls fall to Mead

The Cheney girls’ tennis team lost 7-0 in a Greater Spokane League match to Mead March 23.

Valerie Hanes, Claire Watkins, Anabelle Taylor and Sydney Lincoln each lost in straight sets. The same was also true in doubles for Colleen McKinnon and Angelica Goold, Martyna Stepniak and Victoria Baycroft along with Hailey Magalsky and Delanee Griffin.
