Locals contribute to car give-away

CHENEY – Local woman receives refurbished car, courtesy of Cheney business owners and private donors. Sabrina Meyer, the recipient of the vehicle, was given the keys on March 15.

Steve Burke, of Burke's Repair, 107 H. Street, first acquired the used car from a former client who was planning to move out of state. This client agreed to sell the car to Burke at a reduced price under the condition that it be donated to a member of the community.

"I put a post on the Cheney Neighbor Facebook page, just asking them to nominate somebody that they know who may need a car, and to tell me how it would change their lives." Burke said.

Burke said that word soon circulated and people in the community began to contribute to the repair of the car.

"One of my friends donated $150 worth of brake parts, and another customer, a detailer, decided to donate his time to detail it." Burke said.

Burke continued by saying that the Cheney O'Reilly Auto Parts donated sundry car parts, the value of which nearly matched his own contribution in parts. "It's a real community effort."

The donors who contributed parts, labor, or monetary resources to the project are as follows:

Oreilly Auto Parts, Cheney Free Press, Roger's Towing, Pizza Hut, Willie's Auto Detailing, Skyline Tree Service, RJR Tractor, The Ford Horsemen Car Club, Logan Edwards, Dan Zimmerman, Sarah Rodr, Jeff and Jennifer Lichorobiec, Drew Byrd, Phil and Judy Grafious, Mike Hennings and Family, Jonathan Hulett and Family, Rosalia Auto Licensing.
