MEDICAL LAKE – A new councilman was elected to the city council on Feb. 21.
Former councilman Theodore (Ted) Olson was elected by tie-breaking vote at the regular session of the city council. Olson, whose first term with the city council was in 2019, had been one of three candidates selected from a previous interview process, and was the council’s second nomination.
The first nomination put forward was Kelly Shaffer, who was voted down four against, and two in favor. After rejection of this candidate, the mayor opened the floor for additional nominations.
Olson was nominated and seconded, and received three affirmative votes, and three negative.
“In the case of such a tie, the Mayor can cast a vote to break it.” City administrator Sonny Weathers said.
“It’s kind of an interesting scenario with this one.” Weathers said. “The councilwoman who previously occupied this position vacated in the first year of her term. State law dictates that we must fill that vacancy within 90 days. The position must remain on the ballot until Nov. 2023.”
Despite this, Weathers said, Olson’s first official council meeting will be in March of 2023.
“He is a long-time resident of Medical Lake and was previously appointed a council member.” Weathers said.
“I’ve been coming to the council meetings since my previous term.” Olson said. “My hats off to the other candidates and I hope they apply for other council positions.”
Olson said that it was honor to be voted for and that he anticipates positive forward motion on many issues.
“I am a substitute school bus driver; Almost seven years.” Olson said. “The driver shortage is really nation wide and it really needs to be addressed.” Olson said regarding his community experience and perspective.
