Former policeman sues Cheney for $5.5 million

Council forwards claim to insurance company

CHENEY – Attorneys representing former police officer Chad Eastep have filed a notice of tort claim with the city, claiming damages of $5.5 million.

This claim for damages form and the accompanying tort claim were filed with the city on Jan. 9, 2023. The claims are filed against the city and the police department for injurious conduct, wrongful termination, breach of contract, and others, according to the notice.

Eastep, who is listed as the claimant, is seeking for loss of retirement benefits, front-pay and non-retirement benefits, loss of reputation, and punitive damages, according to the notice.

The notice also describes the “conduct and circumstances” that brought about the injury and damages as including injurious behavior which began in June of 2020.

This claim was brought before council at its regular meeting on Jan. 24. Council voted to forward the claim to their insurance company.

After the vote, councilman Paul Schmidt said “They’ll take care of it.”

After commenting that this was his first rodeo, councilman Mark Posthuma said “I have questions, but I guess I can discuss them elsewhere.”
