Eastern Washington’s women’s basketball team swept its games over the past weekend with notable Big Sky Conference victories over Idaho and at Montana.
The Eagles turned the tables on the Grizzlies in Missoula, Jan. 16 with a dominating 87-60 victory, this after an 81-70 loss to Montana in the Big Sky opener, Dec. 29 at Reese Court. On Saturday, Jan. 14 as part of a doubleheader with the EWU men, the Eagle women topped Idaho 74-59, halting a nine-game losing streak against the Vandals.
At Dahlberg Arena Eastern set the tone early in the game, opening with a 10-0 run. Eastern was up 48-25 at halftime and would push its lead to nearly 30 at 56-29 with 6 minutes, 35 seconds to play in the third quarter.
Jaydia Martin keyed the win with a career-high 33 points, Jaleesa Lawrence had 13 points and Milly Knowles 12.
In breaking its lengthy victory drought against the Vandals, the Eagles turned a 2-point deficit into 55-48 lead after three quarters. An 8-0 run in the fourth quarter sealed it.
Milly Knowles scored 10 points in the third quarter that powered the run, and she finished with a career-high 14 in the game.
Martin was the team’s high scorer with 16 points while Knowles finished with a career-high 14. Jamie Loera posted her first career double-double at Eastern, tallying 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds with Jaleesa Lawrence adding 12.
Eastern defeated Idaho for the first time since Jan. 12, 2018, ending the longest losing streak for Eastern against any Big Sky team.
Eastern, 3-3 in conference and 10-6 overall, will be back at Reese Court to play Northern Colorado on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. and then host Northern Arizona Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.
