CHENEY – City light department has put forward two resolutions which, if approved, would enable the city to request certified technician crews from Inland Power and Eastern Washington University to perform work when needed.
“To perform maintenance on the various components of any power infrastructure, from power lines to cables, a person needs to be certified.” Steve Marx, Light Department Director, said.
Marx said that the city has a full crew of certified professionals who can perform electrical distribution work.
“So does Eastern Washington University, as far as I know. But when an event of large enough proportions occurs, the resources we and other agencies have may not be enough to deal with it.” Marx said.
There are two agreements the light department has proposed as resolutions. One involves Inland Power, and one involves Eastern.
“Basically these agreements state that the city can call Eastern or Inland Power for assistance with any electrical distribution problem, and they can ask us also.” Marx said.
“It’s a “good neighbor” sort of thing, you know?” Marx said.
“This agreement wouldn’t make anything mandatory. Either Inland or Eastern could say “no” if they wanted. It really just puts into writing the agreement and outline the compensation rates,” Marx said.
