City council releases draft update for 2023 legislative agenda

CHENEY – Council released on Jan. 10 an update to its legislative priorities which will be submitted to the 9th legislative district.

“Basically what we do is come up with an agenda for the city as the legislature goes into session.” City administrator Mark Schuller, said.

The agenda includes several priorities that are unique to the city, as well as other items that have broader implications.

“Each item on this agenda is important, but some of them are certainly more focused on the city, specifically, than others.” Schuller said.

The first item on the agenda is the city’s intention to seek an additional $5 million (approximately) to complete the purple pipe project.

Some of the items, such as support for Eastern Washington University’s project Phase II, are more about “visibility and advocacy.” Schuller said.

Keeping some of these issues at the forefront of the minds of individuals in the legislature and in the federal sector is the goal that Schuller has in mind.

“We advocate against the removal of Snake River dams, for example.” Schuller said. “Hydroelectric power is vitally important to our region and the entire area. It is important to me that consumers know the impact of such a proposal.” Schuller said.
