Police Chief Rick Bechtel comments on string of crimes
CHENEY/AIRWAY HEIGHTS – Multiple vehicle prowling incidents were reported by Airway Heights and Cheney police departments between Dec. 19-31.
Cheney Police Chief Rick Bechtel said “The holidays provide a density of opportunity for vehicle prowlers, and we usually see an ebb and flow of increased activity during these times.”
Lieutenant J. Keith of Airway Heights police also commented, saying of the prowls “There’s no evidence that they are in any way related or connected in an organized way.”
“It’s unfortunate,” Bechtel said “but people tend to let their guard down during the holidays, leaving their gifts and valuables in their cars in plain view. It just makes it easier to spot a vulnerable vehicle.”
Bechtel said that the current string of vehicle prowls is likely a part of the usual “ebb and flow” of criminal activity that the police department sees over the course of a year.
He advises that residents should secure their vehicles and put items of value out of sight to help reduce risk.
