Sonny Weathers gave remarks, and other items from city council meeting

MEDICAL LAKE - City Administrator, Sonny Weathers, commented on the fatal shooting that occurred on Dec. 23, 2022.

"We want to thank both the members of the Spokane Country sheriff's office and fire district 3 for responding so rapidly to the situation and restoring safety to our community." The incident involved victim Colin Bastow, and suspect Cynthia B. Metsker.

"The investigation is ongoing, but it is clear that this incident stemmed from a domestic violence situation." Weathers encouraged members of the community who may be experiencing domestic violence to seek help, and directed them to the "ample" resources available.

Council also announced that Ptera Inc., an internet service provider, will be bringing both a fixed wireless and optic cable internet infrastructure to Medical Lake in the first and second quarters of the year.

Additionally, a presentation was given on the state requirements for filling a vacancy on City council. The vacancy council will be attempting to fill in 2023 that of Councilwoman Dawn Olmstead, who announced her resignation at the Dec. 20, 2022 regular council meeting.

The city is also seeking a Parks and Recreations director who "should offer strong recreation and visionary experience."

The city administrator said "We want someone who can manage, plan, develop, and engage. Our community is a haven for the enjoyment of the outdoors. Visitors can enjoy the backdrop of our farmland, forest, and lakes, and our director should bring the knowledge and abilities necessary to preserve and enhance these."
