Cardinals overcome sickness to gain split
Despite being saddled by sickness, the Medical Lake girls’ basketball team found what it needed to collect at least one win out of two games last week.
“It was a crazy week for us,” new coach Brett Ward wrote in an email. “For pretty much the entire week we had three of our nine varsity players out sick.” At one point half of the whole program was out sick Ward said.
Despite that, the Cardinals lost to Northwest Christian 43-22 on Dec. 6 on the road but topped Lind-Ritzville/Sprague at home 48-41, Dec. 9.
“Two solid teams we played last week,” Ward said. “(It’s) good to get at least one win as we try to build positive momentum towards our first league game on Friday.”
The Cardinals were not able to crack double-figures in any quarter against the Crusaders as they were able to hold Charde Luat to only seven points as the Cards’ leading scorer.
“Against Northwest Christian, we started off okay but ran out of gas playing a six-man rotation,” Ward said.
Friday, Medical Lake took charge with a decisive second quarter where they outscored the Broncos 18-7. “We were a little healthier against Lind Ritzville and played like it,” Ward said.
Delaney Gunther and Luat each scored 18 points with Gunther hitting five 3-pointers for Medical Lake.
Following a Dec. 15 game where they hosted Greater Spokane League North Central, Medical Lake starts Northeast A League play Dec. 16 at Newport.
